Imiching

A contemporary visual companion to the I Ching.

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, holds 64 hexagrams and 384 line statements. Imiching turns a reader's drawn gesture into one situated encounter with that structure—without presenting the result as an answer.

A repeatable encounter

Gesture becomes number. Number becomes line.

A reader draws two circles and a tangent. Their geometry becomes three values—Earth, Heaven and Human—which a deterministic local calculation maps to a hexagram and one moving line.

The selection itself does not use AI. Only the optional Closer Reading uses AI to return a bounded reflection, one question and one small action. It is designed neither to predict nor decide.

Research note

Where the Line Refuses to Close

Imiching treats cross-cultural interpretation as repeated encounter rather than complete explanation. A participant may approach the classic, withdraw and return under altered circumstances; meaning remains situated and unfinished.

This is productive untranslatability: the limit of translation becomes a place where human authorship is visible. Authorship lies in composing the rules, visual grammar, rhythms and refusals through which machine-mediated meaning remains open to human judgement.
